Joseph Henry Bramwell

Wednesday 9 July 2008

My great grandfather, Joseph Henry Bramwell, was the eldest child of Peter Bramwell & Susannah Crossland.

He was born in 1874 at Chapel-en-le-Frith & baptised at the Parish Church on 5 Jul 1874
Joseph Henry son of Peter & Susanna Bramwell, Church Brow, CELF, Slater

Joseph married Edith Lillian Payne on 8 Oct 1912 at the Register Office, Pontefract.

They had 3 children:
1. Betty Bramwell
2. Tom Bramwell
3. Joseph Henry Bramwell.

Joseph Henry Bramwell died on 10 Jul 1937 at Chapel-en-le-Frith and was buried with his parents at the Parish Church, Chapel-en-le-Frith

Betty Bramwell

Betty was the first daughter of Joseph Henry Bramwell & Edith Lillian Payne.

She was born in 1913 in Pontefract, Yorkshire.

Sadly she died in 1918 aged 4.

Marjory Walker told me that Betty had gone to school one day and didn't come home. When they went to look for her they had found her lying in the snow, dead. Apparently she had died of pneumonia.

Tom Bramwell

Tom Bramwell was the second child & first son of Joseph Henry Bramwell & Edith Lillian Payne.

He was born on 6 Jul 1915 in Pontefract, Yorkshire

After the death of his sister, the family moved to Kent.

He married Kathleen Amy Eastland on 16 Nov 1940 at the Parish Church, Minster, Thanet, Kent. Kathleen was the daughter of Walter Elvy Eastland & Ellen Matilda Notley & was born on 12 Nov 1919 in Minster, Thanet

They had 3 children:
Joseph Henry Bramwell
Valerie Ann Bramwell
Peter John Bramwell

Uncle Joe the shorter told me, the reason Tom had returned from Kent to Chapel-en-le-Frith was because they had asked him (as the eldest son) to carry on the Sextonship of the Parish Church. He used to dig the graves and was vey good at his job. He would dig them very deep and the sides were as straight as you could get them and none of them ever collapsed. But he would only get a few shillings for each of them. Uncle Joe said he was always drinking and had a lot of arguements and fallings out with the vicar of the church too. Next door to the church, going down Burrfields, was a big factory called Ferodo Brake Linings. The men earn't a lot of money there and so he left the church and went to work at Ferodo. He was the last Bramwell to be Sexton of the church.

They lived at 64 Park Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith. Around 1972 Tom & Kathleen divorced and Kathleen took the youngest son Peter to Epsom in Surrey. Joe & Val were married by this time.

A few years later, Tom left Park Road and went to live in London with his son Peter where he died on 10 Nov 1983.

Uncle Joe the shorter told me that a lady stopped him in the street one day (in Chapel-en-le-Frith) and asked him what he wanted done with his brother Tom's ashes? Uncle Joe had no idea that he had even died. Apparently Peter Bramwell, Tom's son, had had him cremated in London. (He had lived with them for the last few years of his life.) He had bought his ashes back to Chapel and left them in a plastic bag in the vestry of the church with a note attached, saying, his last wish was to be put in the same grave as his grandparents, Peter & Susannah Bramwell. Uncle Joe contacted a few members of the family but not many wanted to know. Tom had been divorced from his wife, Kathleen, for a long time and had physically & mentally abused his children and so they didn't want anything to do with him. A few older members of the family including his brother (Uncle Joe) went to the church and he was put in the grave of his grandparents. When Uncle Joe had gone to settle the bill for the funeral with the vicar , the vicar said Tom's son Peter had left enough money to cover all the expenses.

Joseph Henry Bramwell

Joseph Henry Bramwell was the third child & second son of Joseph Henry Bramwell & Edith Lillian Payne.

He was born at 35 South Ave, Pontefract, Yorkshire on 20 Sep 1918

He married Marjorie Garlick on 25 Jun 1946 at the Parish Church, Bradwell, Derbyshire. They had one daughter Carol.

Private Bramwell Killed

All Chapel-en-le-Frith was grieved to hear of the death of Pte. Tom Bramwell, who rejoined the Territorials - for he was a reserve man - at the beginning of the war and went to France a short while ago. Pte. Bramwell was an exceedingly well known person in the town and resided on the Market Place. He was 34 years of age.

A letter of condolence has been received from Col. Goodman, as follows: "I am extremely sorry to say that your son Tom was killed in the trenches late last night. He was shot in the spine, I believe, and only lived a short time. He will be buried tonight in the British Cemetery not far away and I shall attend with any who can be spared. Tom has done his work & duty well since he has been with the Battalion. I deeply regret his loss & sympathise with you all in your bereavement. It will be some consolation to know he has given his life for his country - your faithfully G. D. Goodman Lt. Col."

On another page:

By the death of Private Bramwell of Chapel-en-le-Frith, the Great War has been brought home to residents in no uncertain manner. Not that the death of other townsmen are not deeply deplored by all, but Private Bramwell, always maintained such an intimate connection with the town; he was so well known.

As a footballer his achievements on the field of play will not soon fade from the "footballing mind". His headwork espscially was renowned throughout the Peak. "He could do anything with his head" remarked one devotee of the game, and so he could! He captained the Chapel XI a couple of years ago, when they carried off triple honours - the Derbyshire Challenge Cup, the Stockport & District League Cup and the Buxton & District League Sheild. Altogether he had led the team for three years and was the oldest member.

Bramwell commenced football playing twenty years ago, and was, without doubt, the best centre-half we had in the district. He possesed over twenty football medals, practically all of which were won playing with the team of his native town.

The game of cricket also had in him a devotee, and he played for the Chapel Cricket XI.

Homing was another of his hobbies and several cups were won by his birds. Alas! we shall see him no more.

The sextonship of the Parish Church has been in the Bramwell family for several hundred years, and a record of this is preserved over the Sexton-house door. It reads: "Joseph Bramwell monumental mason, near the Parish Church, Chapel-en-le-Frith. Peter Bramwell over 52 years, Sexton at the said parish, his son 40 years, his grandson 38, his great grandson 50, his great great grandson 43, his great great great grandsons 39: 1631 - 1883" Surely a wonderful record. But the continuity has not been broken, for deceased's father is alive and well. To say Private Bramwell was a great favourite with all would be to make use of a platitude. His death is deeply deplored by all.

In the Parish Church, Chapel-en-le-Frith is a wall memorial In memory of

A passage from William Braylesford Buntings book reads ...

It is a rare thing to still have a Hearse House. The earlier one was in the churchyard itself and the horses were obliged to trample on the graves, which was seen to be profane. The present one, according to the lease of land, dated March 3rd 1819 demands a yearly rent of of "one peppercorn". It stands on the main road and has recently been restored. On a large stone above the door is the inscription: "Erected when Samuel Grundy was minister an Adam Fox and Stephen Bellot were church wardens." The charge for the hire of the hearse "with bobs and plumes" was from one shilling (5p) - families to supply their own horse. The sexton, Peter Bramwell was to have full use of the loft above, to store his mole catching tools and the use of the fireplace "to dry his cloathes". He could be the same sexton who kept is pint ale-pot in the Bagshaw vault.

Peter died 23 Jan 1854.

**The Parish of Chinley, Bugsworth & Brownside old map says Oxley Firn & Briely Fields.

A passage from the book 'Chapel-en-le-Frith, Its People and its History' by Wm Braylesford Bunting.

Opposite to the Black Greyhound is the house for many years belonging to the Shepley family and now occupied by Messers Shepley, painters. In the possession of this family and long kept in this house is a "Yule Log", attached to which is the following note signed by Peter Bramwell, of The Park, who died in 1886. "Constance Oliver bread baker bought this girl Sally Shepley this little yule loaf on New Years Day 1777 as she was poorly. She played with it as long as she lived and was the daughter of Thomas & Mary Shepley. Her parents kept it during their life then left it to their daughter Bessie, sister to Sally for her to take care of then she left it to her neice Marth Shepley my wife and it has been in my possession for forty seven years."

Carew Hazlitt (Faiths & Folklore) says Yule loaf or Yule dough was a kind of baby or little image of paste which bakers used formerly to bake at Christmas & present to their customers. He suggests it was intended as an image of the infant Christ.

After talking to Uncle Joe the shorter about Peter Bramwell & Martha he told me where they lived on Old Park Rd, Chapel-en-le-Frith. On the outside wall of the house is a stone plaque with PB 1826 on it ... Peter Bramwell house built 1826. No 4 Park Houses is now owned by Andrew Boundy and he has found, hidden in an interior wall, a plaque that says "This house built by Peter & Martha Bramwell 1826. "

There is also a gravestone on the cellar floor which says ... Sacred the memory of the daughter of Peter ... Hannah Bramwell who died January 15th 1815 aged 4. There is another gravestone outside which is in the path but no inscription is known.

We have found the burial entry for Ellen Bramwell, daughter of Peter Bramwell who died 15 Jan 1815 aged 4. So we presume the name was a mistake and that's why it ended up on the floor of the cellar ~ 19th century recycling!

Andrew very kindly sent me the Epitone of Title which shows how the house was passed on. Incredibly, Ada Hitchens was also a decendent of the Bramwell family.

Peter Bramwell

About the time Peter became Sexton, Charles I was King of England, Shakespear had died 6 years earlier & the Taj Mahal was started.

Bramwell Legacy

In 1979 my great uncle, Joe Bramwell (affectinately know as Uncle Joe the Shorter) gave me a piece of paper containing a list of names and told me that these people were my ancestors. This is that piece of paper.List of "Bramwells" family who were Sextons at Chapel-en-le-Frith Church

My mother gave me a book that belonged to her father. The Parish Church St. Thomas a Becket Chapel-en-le-Frith by W. Bunting dated 1925 In it is a passage

The family of Bramwell can claim an even more lengthy association with the Church as Sextons than their friends in the Belfry, for since 1631 the post has been practically hereditary. On the Sexton's workshop in Dane's Yard adjoining the Churchyard may be read, carved in stone, the following inscription:

"Charles Bramwell, died 1878, and was Sexton of Chapel-en-le-Frith for 24 years. His father 43, his Grandfather 50, his Great-grandfather 38, his Great-great-grandfather 40, his Great-great-great-grandfather 52."

The Parish Register records the burial on 6 February, 1720-1, of "George Bramwell, Sexton of this Church who had been Sexton near 40 years." Charles Bramwell mentioned above, was succeeded by his nephew Joseph Bramwell, who with a short interval (when his brother James Bramwell acted) was Sexton until his death in 1910, when he was succeeded by his nephew Tom Bramwell. On the latter, who was a member of "B" Coy. 6th Batt. Sherwood Forresterd (T.F), being mobilised on 4th August, 1914, his father Peter Bramwell took up the duty temporarily, but Tom being killed in action at Kemmel in May 1915, Peter Bramwell became Sexton and so continued till his death in January 1923, when he was succeeded by a younger son, James Bramwell, the present Sexton. The Derby Mercury Newspaper ~ Wednesday June 21 1893 Opposite the Parish Church I found the brick building, now unfortunately deralict, that is known to the locals as the Sextons Shop. Above the window is a stone described by W. Bunting, but reads

Joseph Bramwell Monumental Mason near the Parish Church Chapel-en-le Frith
Peter Bramwell for 52 years, Sexton at the said church, his son 40 years, his grandson 38, his great grandson 50, his great great grandson 43, his great great great grandsons 39
1631 - 1883 Has the stone been replaced? or did W. Bunting get his facts wrong? Joseph out lived his brother Charles!!

My Uncle Joe (Uncle Joe the taller, nephew of Uncle Joe the shorter) lent me a postcard. The date is unreadable but the stamp on the back shows a picture of King Edward VII who reigned from 1901 to 1910. The half penny stamp was in circulation between 1902 and 1911. It is addressed to Mrs H Hobson, Post Office, Hope, Via Sheffield and says

Thanks for the P C this morning you had not forgot the day but no one at home thought about it. I will write to you some other time Pollie. On the front is a photograph of a Bramwell stood in the church entrance. Above the photo is written

A Record - Peter Bramwell, the last Parish Clerk of Chapel-en-le-Frith held office for 52 years; his grandfather 52 years - in all 104 years.

Below the photograph is written

Another Record - Charles Bramwell, died 1878 and was Sexton of Chapel-en-le-Frith for 24 years, his father 43, his grandfather 50, his great grandfaher 38, his great great grandfather 40, his great great great grandfather 52 years - in all 247 years. On the left of the entrance is a notice dated 22nd May 1887.This rules out the possibility of it being Charles Bramwell.

At the back of the Parish Church is a wooden panel on the last row of pews which states

1931 About this time the Bramwell family completed three centuries of service as Sextons of this church & parish 1631 Peter, 1683 George, 1761 Peter, 1811 Peter, 1854 Charles, 1878 Joseph, 1893 James, 1899 Joseph , 1808 Tom, 1914 Peter, 1923 James, 1951 Tom I found a loose piece of paper in the archives at the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock. It's a table set out in 4 columns. The heading for the first column says 'name' the second 'period stated on slab, years' the third 'dates in newspaper cutting' & the fourth, 'reference in parish register'.
